Bomgaars is planning a $17-million expansion of its operations in Sioux City. The retail farm supply company plans to nearly double the size of its distribution center on Zenith Drive, adding 150,000 square feet.

177 jobs will be retained and at least 15 more jobs are expected to be created with the expansion, according to company officials.

Bomgaars has grown from 15 stores to 66 over the past ten years, and company officials say they've outgrown the site. The family-owned business started in Sioux City more than 60 years ago. Company officials considered expanding in Nebraska or South Dakota, but decided to stay put.

"Sioux City has been home to the company since the '40s. We have two of our largest stores here. The support from the community and our retail sales is phenomenal and we just felt that if we could make it work financially and also logistically on that site that this is ultimately where we would like to be," said Torrey Wingert, Bomgaars Vice President and CEO.

The city of Sioux City and the state of Iowa have pledged more than $3.5-million in tax incentives for the project.

"Bomgaars is a great employer in this community as we all know and to make sure that warehouse stayed in Iowa and, you know, they could have put it anywhere quite frankly, and to make sure it stayed in Iowa was really important to the city," said Mayor Bob Scott.

The project also includes improvements to Zenith Drive, tied in with the Interstate 29 expansion project. Construction is set to begin next spring and take about a year-and-a-half to complete.
