The Iowa National Guard has laid off 100 state employees including 15 from Sioux City.

They have also cancelled more training due to the ongoing partial government shutdown.

The state Department of Public Defense employees received notice Thursday afternoon that they would be temporarily laid off for up to 60 days beginning Friday.

Officials say this immediate action is in lieu of a 30-day temporary layoff that was scheduled to begin on October 18.

About 2,100 full-time Iowa National Guard employees remain on duty.

Many were furloughed then called back to work due to the Pay Our Military Act.

Colonel Greg Hapgood says he hopes the layoffs do not have to go long but it is dependent on the government shutdown.
