High winds fuel field fire near Ruthven, IA

High winds hampered efforts to put out a field fire that threatened four rural Ruthven, Iowa homes, including one owned by the fire chief himself.

Crews got the call just after 3:15 Saturday afternoon to a field owned by Jay Clausing.

When he arrived, Grange says he saw a wall of fire.

He was worried it was jump the road and spread into town, which was only half a mile away.

Three tractors with 50-foot disks were set out to till the fire out, as they began to run out of water.

Grange says damage was limited to the 150 acres of corn were lost.

He advises farmers who still need to harvest, to bring tilling equipment or a water tank with them because of the dry conditions.
