Iowa National guard employees return to work

Posted: Updated:
JOHNSTON (KWWL) -

The Iowa National Guard says it has recalled the more than 120 employees that were laid off as part of the government shutdown.

Col. Greg Hapgood says the five federal technicians who were furloughed since Oct. 1 and the 117 Iowa Department of Public Defense employees who were laid off since Friday have all returned to work.

More than 1,000 federal technicians with the Iowa National Guard were laid off on Oct. 1, but were recalled on Oct. 7 as a result of the interpretation of the Pay Our Military Act by the U.S. Departments of Defense and Justice.

The government shutdown ended Thursday morning after President Barack Obama signed the bipartisan legislation passed by the House and the Senate.

October drills and training assemblies that were canceled will be rescheduled.
