WATERLOO (KWWL) -

As your kids prepare to go out, police suggest you do your homework so your little ghosts and zombies don't knock on the door of a sex offender.

Iowa doesn't have a specific law preventing sex offenders from handing out candy on Beggars' Night.

Peggy Anderson enjoys Halloween so much she works at Halloween Bootique in Waterloo. In just a few days, she's going to have a busy night trick-or-treating.

"I have four grandkids that I'll be taking, plus the two of mine," said Anderson.

She says they usually head to neighborhoods they know pretty well. She says when she heard Iowa doesn't have a specific law stopping sex offenders from handing out candy, she was a little frightened.

"I think if every parent or grandparent will go to the door with their kid, the sex offenders wouldn't have a chance," said Anderson.

"For my children, we won't be going to any sex offender's house," said Dan Trelka, Waterloo Director of Safety Services. "It's that plain and simple. I've checked the registry."

Trelka says checking the Iowa Sex Offenders Registry is important. It shows a picture, why they were put on the list, and where they currently live.

For example, within a 10-mile radius of Waterloo, there are 251 sex offenders.

"Where my kids will be trick or treating we simply won't stop, because some of these offenders are not on probation so their rules aren't as strict and limited as they could be," said Trelka.

Trelka says those limitations depend on the offenders' probation officers.
