Ballot empty for Sergeant Bluff, IA mayoral race

One week from Tuesday, voters in Iowa will go to the polls for the general election.

And there's something that might grab the attention of those at the polls in Sergeant Bluff.

No one is running for mayor.

Woodbury County election commissioner Pat Gill said this is rare for areas that size, but they do see it in more rural towns in the county.

Since no names are on the ballot, the mayor will be chosen based on the person voters write in.

Gill said the position is a big commitment, but he's not worried about the city filling the job

"I'm sure that somebody will be elected by write-in and it will be settled that way. There's also a chance that there will be a tie vote because the names are spread out," Gill said.

Gill said if there's a tie vote, the county board of supervisors will put the names in a hat, and draw the winner.
