Carson Cancer Center celebrates 25 years of helping patients

A northeast Nebraska hospital is celebrating two and a half decades of providing cancer treatment to residents in their area.

The Carson Cancer Center at Faith Regional Health Services in Norfolk held a 25th anniversary open house and celebration on Friday.

Staff gave tours of the facility and got an opportunity to get a close-up view of the Center's many treatment options.

Hospital officials say the Center treats anywhere from 400 to 500 patients annually.

They've been able to grow steadily over the years thanks to the philanthropic efforts of the Center's namesake: former Tonight Show host Johnny Carson.

Dr. Mohammed Zahra, Carson Cancer Center said, "Our beloved Johnny Carson, with his continuous donations over the years, kept us on the cutting edge of technology."

"Over the past 25 years, the Carson Cancer Center has provided hope and healing for thousands of patients and families," said Tim Auwarter, Faith Regional CEO.

When the facility was dedicated in October, 1988, Johnny Carson asked that the facility be named in honor of his parents as opposed to himself.

Carson provided over half of the funding for the facility during its initial construction and planning phase.
