ANTHON, Iowa (KTIV) -

Federal investigators have joined county and state authorities looking into the discovery of a pipe bomb in Anthon, Iowa.

A city worker found the device shortly before four 'o clock Tuesday near the town's water tower and brought it to city hall.

Authorities evacuated the building and sealed off the entire block around it.

A remote controlled robot was brought in and used to remove the device.

It was taken out of town and detonated at a shooting range outside Correctionville Tuesday night.

The ATF, the Iowa State Fire Marshal and the Woodbury County Sheriff's Office are trying to determine who put the device there.

Woodbury County Sheriff's Office asked if anyone has information on this incident to call 1-800-352-4606.

Tense moments in Anthon, Iowa, Tuesday evening, after a pipe bomb is found next to the town's water tower.

The Woodbury County Sheriff's Department was notified about 3:50 in the afternoon when the city worker who found that pipe bomb brought it to Anthon's City Hall.

Authorities evacuated and sealed off the block around the building.

Once they determined it was an explosive device, a remote controlled robot was used to remove it from the building.

They say the device appeared to have been previously ignited, but had not detonated.

The bomb was then taken to a shooting range, south of Correctionville, where it was detonated Tuesday night.

"It's a rare thing for Woodbury County, period. We don't get a lot of calls like this," said Greg Stallman, Woodbury County Sheriff Major.

The Sheriff's Department, along with the ATF and Iowa State Fire Marshal's office are trying to determine who made the bomb and why.
