Francis Bacon's "Three Studies of Lucian Freud" was bought for more than $142 million.
A 1969 painting set a world record Tuesday night for the most expensive artwork ever sold at an auction.
After six minutes of intense bidding, Francis Bacon's "Three Studies of Lucian Freud" was bought for more than $142 million at Christie's postwar and contemporary art sale. The painting depicts Bacon's artist friend. It's not clear who purchased the piece of art.
The previous world record was set back in 2012 when Edvard Munch's "The Scream" sold for nearly $120 million at a Sotheby's auction.
