A Cherokee, Iowa man is charged with Attempted Murder after police said he kicked in the door of a home Tuesday night and went after the woman inside with a hammer.

34-year-old Joseph Kosiba is being held on $50,000 bond.

Police responded to a 911 call at 7:30 from Maranna Wiley saying that Kosiba had broken into her house and was trying to kill her.

The woman and her daughter fled the home.

Police said Kosiba then hit a man who was in the house in the side of the head with the hammer.

That man, identified in court documents as 34-year-old Rolando Polendo, suffered a laceration to the scalp and ear.

In addition to attempted murder, Kosiba faces five other charges, including burglary and assault.
