Transgender athletes discussed in Norfolk, NE

NORFOLK, Nebraska (KTIV/US92) - The Nebraska High School Activities Association has been in the hot seat recently for the organization's posting of a proposed policy on allowing transgender students to take part in sports.

The NSAA held district meetings across the state Wednesday.

District Three representative to the board and Superintendent of the Battle Creek, Nebraska school district Jay Bellar addressed the issue during the Norfolk Meeting although it wasn't on the meeting agenda.

Bellar said, "There's been a question on do we have a policy for transgender, and the answer is absolutely not, we don't nor do we plan to. We are just making schools aware of, if they have someone comes and talks to them about that, they should be advised by the legal council at that point in time on how to proceed with it."

The issue came to light, when the Nebraska Activites Association published a proposed policy regarding transgender athletes on its website last May.

NSAA officials didn't vote on such a policy so they removed it from their website.
