We live in the world of "Glee" and "High School Musical." TV, and movies, have made show choir "cool." At Sioux City East High School, singing and dancing were never "out of step".
But, when self-described "show choir mom" Jean Graham challenged our own Matt Breen to try out for the school's "Headliners" show choir, we had to ask, "can Matt do that?"
The audition for "Headliners" has two parts. There's dancing, and singing. And, you have to do both. Serina Jolivette, Director of Choral Activities, said "Kids have to be pretty aware, 'what am I good at?' 'What do I have to work at?'"
Matt has sung his whole life, and the vocal audition went well. Dancing, on the other hand, didn't go as well. Senior Nick Croston is starting his third year as a "Headliner". He says the auditions don't get easier. Nick Croston, Senior said, "The dancing... obviously there's not much you can practice for that. I just say, 'you just have to do your best.'" Croston's a busy guy. Nick Croston, Senior said, "Between school and my extracurricular activities, I've got a lot on my plate." Show choir is his "release". Nick Croston, Senior said, "When I'm on that stage, I forget about every single ounce of it. And I'm able to kinda let it out in a sense."
The trophies that crowd the cases at East High quickly remind these kids there's history, here. And, it shows them hard work pays off. Mitch Polley, Junior said, "They are a good reminder." Junior Mitch Polley is a 2-year member of "Headliners". Mitch Polley, Junior said, "We constantly have to look back on those. And, when we're having not the best rehearsal going on, we look at those and say, 'hey, this is what we need to strive for'."
Director Serina Jolivette, "Miss J" to these young performers, sets the bar high. Serina Jolivette, Director of Choral Activities, said "They have to dance like they've been dancing since they came out of the womb. They have to project their voices like they are all professional singers."
Sadly, there was nothing professional Matt's dance tryout. But, before he could hang my head, his young teachers had one more lesson to teach. Mitch Polley, Junior said, "Always stay confident, even if you're screwing up. If you don't know this dance move, come back in on the one that you know."
