Envelope artist shares talent through the mail

While many artists strive to have their art on display, one Siouxland artist's artwork is the delight of the City of Norfolk's administrative offices.

Norfolk Nebraska Artist Keith Roll starts each day at his drawing table, Roll even says that at the age of 95, he has better dexterity  than many people half of his age.

"That really, most all are thankful that I devote up to an hours time, on a simple thing as addressing their envelope," said Roll

Roll served in the U.S. Army, and even his letters to his wife Alice, were intricately decorated.  After his military service, Roll moved to Norfolk and served as the art director for the Norfolk Daily News, illustrating many company logos that are still in use today.

Tammy Stephenson with the City of Norfolk said that she first began receiving intricately decorated envelopes around 1994. Some Siouxland utilities have even marked Roll as not paying, due to the artful envelopes.

"Drawings are so good, and I'm just amazed at how well he does with these drawings, they're just very intricate and colorful, just very enjoyable. Everyone in the office, we kind of pass them around so everybody gets to enjoy them," said Stephenson.

For his City of Norfolk bi-monthly water bill, Roll incorporates a water theme. Roll estimates he's drawn on about 4,000  envelopes sent out to relatives, friends or billing agencies. Never duplicating his artwork.

Roll said when it came to his favorite, "I think, its probably what I've done for St. Joseph's Care Center, that my wife would appreciate more than anyone else, I think my favorite drawings were done for that."
