Heelan sets records in 3A title victory

Heelan won it's sixth state title on Thursday. Heelan won it's sixth state title on Thursday.

The trigger-man for Heelan's explosive offense is quarterback Trent Solsma. The senior set all-class finals records with 453 yards passing, six touchdown passes and 23 completions. Solsma only had 7 incompletions in 30 attempts and he did not throw an interception.

"It was amazing. We had so many guys making plays," said Solsma. "Buchmann, Niles, Phil after the catch, he was amazing. So many guys, so many play makers...we're a special team."

Connor Niles tied a 3A championship game record with 9 catches -- which went for a 3A record 193 yards. Philip Jacobson tied an all-time finals mark by scoring five touchdowns, four through the air and one on the ground. To cap his incredible night, Jacobson also intercepted two passes on defense.

"It's definitely a dream come true," Jacobson added.  "Watching the '08 team do it and growing up watching Crusader football, you know. This is what I've been watching and this is what I love to do. Play football."

The 47 to 14 final confirmed Heelan's position as Class 3A's top team -- they spent the entire season at number-1 in the rankings. It's head coach Roger Jansen's second state championship, ending with a perfect 14 and 0 record.

"These kids have done it all year," Roger Jansen said.  "They needed to do it one more time and they came out and just had an unbelievable performance. I couldn't be more proud of these kids and the assistant coaches."

"We put in a lot of work in the offseason and we told ourselves we're not going to let happen last year, happen again.  The hard work that everyone put it, really showed off tonight.  It was great to go get the state title," Solsma said.

Bishop Heelan now has six titles overall and four since the playoffs started in 1972.

The Crusaders have also been the runners-up, 8 times.

Bishop Heelan will welcome home the Crusaders in "The Pit" on Monday night at 7 o'clock.
