Toll booth in Decatur, NE closing for good

A Siouxland toll bridge connecting Iowa and Nebraska will charge its last toll as of Saturday. 

The small toll booth at the base of the bridge connecting Iowa to the outskirts of Decatur, Nebraska has been a staple on the horizon for many years.

While the bridge will continue to span the Missouri River, the toll business will close on Saturday, November 30.
"The people I worked with, they were all really good to work with. And the guy that oversees it, he's a good person too. He's treated us all pretty good. I kind of enjoyed it," David Farber, 15 year employee of the toll bridge said.

The bridge employed about a dozen people from the area, most of them retired. As soon as the toll booth is out, they'll be out of a job.

"You hate to see those guys lose their jobs, including me," Clark Beck, Secretary and Manager of the bridge said.

The bridge will be the property of Nebraska and Iowa's Department of Transportation and will share the duties of snow removal and maintenance, meaning no more tolls from the 40-50 thousand cars a month that drive through, according to Beck.

"I don't think until the flood that the states really realized how much traffic was across here," Beck said.

While the bridge passing ownership from a private company to the states may be something of the end of an era, all of the employees and overseeing officials say they think it's the right move. That way the bridge can stay safe for all the travelers.

"The bridge is 100 percent safe, I don't mean it that way, but it's obsolete because it's not as wide as it should be, so we need the states to start getting in the process of replacing it," Beck said.

"It'll be here a lot longer I think. I think the state will take care of it and the state will be fair with it," Farber said.

Nebraska and Iowa will share duties as far as the maintenance and snow removal goes, but Nebraska will take most of the responsibility for construction decisions for the bridge.
