"Christmas Acres" dazzles during holiday season

This is just one of the hundreds of decorations at Rob Scheitler's "Christmas Acres." This is just one of the hundreds of decorations at Rob Scheitler's "Christmas Acres."
The decorations at Rob Scheitler's home don't seem very impressive in the light.

But at night time, "Christmas Acres" is nothing short of incredible.

"We started doing this when I was a kid," said Scheitler. "We did it at our family farm, which is right down the road."

Scheitler eventually took all the decorations and hangs them every year. But just how many lights are there in the display?

"We estimate about 60 thousand," said Scheitler.

While certainly a sight to behold, it didn't come without much toil. Scheitler worked for almost two months to make sure that the lights were up and running for the Christmas season.

"I take a full week's vacation and work seven days a week non-stop, sun-up to sundown," said Scheitler. "And then I work at it every weekend and in the evenings when I get home from work."

And his work doesn't go unappreciated. Many of the spectators offer donations, which Scheitler then gives to the Christian Needs Center in Le Mars. But for those light on cash, the display is completely free to visit.

"They really enjoy it," added Scheitler. "We get a lot of compliments every night, and they say thank you for everything that we do."

Which is what the Christmas season is all about.

The display will run until January first, but the home will not light up if it is raining.
