UPDATE: Woman hit by bus on Sioux City street

A Sioux City woman has been hospitalized after she was hit by a bus Wednesday morning.

The accident happened about 8:30 a.m. at the corner of 6th Avenue and South Cedar Street in Morningside.  It's near Whittier Elementary school.

Police said the Siouxland Regional Transit Bus hit Freda Gorsett, 71, as she crossed the street.

She was taken to Mercy Medical Center with what authorities now believe were serious injuries.

As of Wednesday evening Gorsett's condition was not being released per family request.

Police said the 71-year old bus driver Robert Pulju was not hurt.  He had apparently just picked up an aide at a home near the intersection and was turning left onto 6th Avenue when the front of the bus struck Gorsett.

A police spokesperson said the accident is still under investigation, but believe weather was not a factor.

They estimate the bus was traveling less than ten miles per hour.
