Shigellosis cases mount in Sioux City metro

SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KTIV) - There doesn't seem to be an end in sight just yet for the Shigella outbreak.

Shigella it's a bacteria found in fecal matter.

In the last several weeks, Siouxland has been in the midst of an outbreak.

Last week, we told you there were 105 cases in the area but that number has grown.

"We have 155 cases in Woodbury County and these go since early October.  We are still seeing cases so it's definitely still around," said Stacy McNear, Laboratory Coordinator.

The best defense against Shigella is to wash your hands.  Health officials say it does spread easily and anyone can get it.
