Le Mars, IA community members hear from state lawmakers

Community members in Le Mars, Iowa came out to learn more about how the state government is doing and get their voices heard on Wednesday.

The local chamber of commerce held their annual "lunch with legislators."

After the meal, State Representative Chuck Soderberg and State Senator Bill Anderson shared insight on the last legislative session and what they expect in the upcoming one, starting in January.

Organizers said it's essential to have these kinds of conversations with politicians.

"I think it's important to keep communication alive between local constituents and our representatives at the state level," Le Mars Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Neal Adler said.

State Representative for the Iowa 5th District Chuck Soderberg said he's attended this event for the past 10 years.

He said the legislature will continue to work on reforms they passed in the last session.

"And, now we have to fund education reform and property tax reform. It was a historic year and so my goal as appropriations chair is to fully fund what we did last year," Soderberg said.

After Soderberg and Anderson spoke, they had an open discussion with community members talking about issues like fuel tax and the economy.
