MidAmerican tries to head off copper thefts

Posted:
SALIX, Iowa (KTIV) -

We've heard the stories.  Copper thefts are growing,  at homes, churches, and even cemeteries.

Now, a Siouxland energy company is tackling these thieves.

MidAmerican Energy has teamed up with Crimestoppers to create a toll-free hotline to report copper thefts at its facilities.

Anyone who suspects the thievery is going is encouraged to make the call.

MidAmerican says it's a serious crime affecting electric utilities all over the nation, including their territory.

"If someone did come and try to steel copper from or facilities, it could be a very dangerous situation. It could cause power surges, outages, fires, explosions, injuries to utility workers and the innocent people coming in contact with the tampered equipment," said Abby Bottenfield, a MidAmerican Energy Spokesperson.

To report any suspicious activity call: (800) 452-1111.
