Staying safe for the holidays in the cold

Posted:
SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KTIV) - We are going to have some extremely cold weather again this week.

But will that do anything to stop holiday travelers in their tracks?

The holidays include family time and celebration, but a lot of the things that go along with the season can add up to bad driving conditions.

The Iowa State Patrol wants everyone to have a happy and safe holidays.

If you're celebrating, they say to stay off the road unless you have a sober driver.

They say with the possibility of snow , you should be sure to pack blankets, food, water, and even a shovel to make sure you're prepared for the worst.

"Just be smart, bring some extra gloves and scarves and everything to keep yourself warm just in case you get stranded for a little bit, until we're able to get to you to help you out. The main thing is to slow down and to avoid getting stuck," Karey Yaneff, Iowa State Trooper said.

Officer Yaneff also said it's a good idea to block out a little extra time for travel.

That way you won't be in a hurry on your way to your holiday celebrations, and everyone can stay safe and warm for Christmas.
