Muskies prepare for first game action in two weeks

The Musketeers return to action Friday. The Musketeers return to action Friday.
The Sioux City Musketeers get back on the ice Friday at the Tyson Events Center.

The Muskies, who are currently riding a 5-game winning streak, face off against Lincoln before traveling to Fargo on Saturday night.

Sioux City hasn't played a game since December 14.

The Muskies currently sit at 17-7-1 in the USHL's west division.

Fargo and Lincoln have the two worst records in the league, which provides an opportunity for the Muskies to pick up a few quick wins to start the second half of the season.
Head coach Jay Varady says he is a little concerned over rust with the two-week layover, but that the team is gelling nicely.

"Over the course of the first half of the year, each group has done its part to make that whole blend come together," said head coach Jay Varady. "As we're headed into the second half of the season after break, we're just going to get to look back to our fundamentals."

The numbers prove Varady's point - through 25 games, Forward Brandon Hawkins leads the Muskies with 14 goals.

Forward Jared Thomas is tied for second in the USHL with 21 assists.
Goalie Kyle Hayton's 2.27 goals against average is good for second in the league.
But the players maintain that a team effort will be the key as they make a playoff push.

"Any way we can help the team, myself or my linemates, just putting goals up on the scoreboard," said Thomas. "Getting the win at the end of the day is what we want to do."

"We're just trying to get our feet back under us," said Hayton. "We had a good practice tonight, we'll have a morning skate in the morning and I think we'll be ready for the game."

Sioux City currently sits in fourth place in the west division with 35 points. The Muskies are just three points out of second place.
