Health officials target specific age group for flu shots

Flu season is underway and health officials said it isn't too late to get your shot.

Siouxland District Health Director Kevin Grieme said his department hasn't seen a major change with the number of flu cases they've seen this year.

But, Grieme said there's a certain age group that needs to take extra precaution this flu season.

"The 5-49 [age group] seems to be affected by more of the strains of influenza that are out there this year, so we really want to alert those people. They may feel they're healthier. They may not need it, they haven't had it in the past, but those are the ones that are getting hit. When they do have it, they're getting hit pretty hard with it, " Grieme said.

Grieme said those ages, 5 to 49, are the group that get vaccinated the least.

He recommends those people who haven't gotten their shots yet to get it soon. They typically see a spike in flu cases in February.
