Football fans overcome differences to celebrate together

SERGEANT BLUFF, Iowa (KTIV)- College football fans in Siouxland may not have agreed on who to cheer for, but that certainly didn't stop them from having fun together, Wednesday.

Dave Meyer and Dick Dempsey have been friends since the 70s, and the Nebraska-Iowa rivalry has made for no exceptions. Years ago, Dave Meyer and Dick Dempsey met when Dick was initiated into the Loyal Order of the Moose. "We've been friends ever since," Dick Dempsey, Sioux City, Iowa said.

There's just one problem: Dave Meyer is a huge Hawkeye fan, and Dick Dempsey loves his Huskers. "No matter what happens, we get along. We might argue a little bit," Dave Meyer, Salix, Iowa said. Both friends say they even try to celebrate together. "Dick and I have been to the Iowa Nebraska game when they play together, in both Lincoln and Iowa," Meyer said. "We were down here watching the Iowa-Nebraska game. It didn't turn out very good for Nebraska, I know that," Dempsey said.

They're not alone in their friendship across rivalry borders. Eddy's Tavern in Sergeant Bluff was packed with both Iowa and Nebraska fans on New Year's Day for both team's bowl appearances, and no one seemed to be too hostile toward each other. Dave Meyer even went as far as to say that sometimes he got along with the occasional Husker fan. "The good ones, I get along great with," Meyer said.

And even though some fans may be more fanatic than others, this whole bar seems to think that maybe there's something to be said for being kind to your rival, even if you may not always agree. "Just getting with friends, and enjoying the game and hospitality," Meyer said.
And some may go as far as to wish the other team luck. "I don't have any predictions, but I'd sure like to see both Nebraska and Iowa win today. Really," Dempsey said.

Even though both teams didn't win, it may have been a happy ending at Eddy's Tavern, after all.
