Norm Waitt Sr. YMCA hosts annual "New Year's Day of Play"

With 2014 underway, some are already getting to work on their New Year's resolutions.

The Norm Waitt Senior YMCA, in South Sioux City, is encouraging people of all ages to get out and be active.

Sliding down the waterslide, playing a big game of checkers, or testing your skills in the "bounce house" were just a few of the activities families could choose from at the YMCA on New Year's Day.

"We always open up the facility, an open house for everybody, just a fantastic way to start the year off, on a healthy, more active note," Chris DeRoin, of the YMCA, said.

"They absolutely need to be up and being active. I mean, when I was a little kid, I was outside from morning until night, and that's not how it is anymore," Jennifer Anderson, of Sioux City, said.

Jennifer Anderson brought her kids to have some fun and get fit.

"It's important for us to do something as family, as just a whole group instead of everybody sitting in different rooms and being lazy," Anderson said.

Anderson's step-son, Jake Johnson, said he knows how important it is to be active. And, if you're not, he said there are consequences.

"You might be like weak and tired all the time," Jake Johnson said.

Johnson said he wants to eat healthier, and exercise more, in 2014.

"I like the basketball court because you get to play with the basketballs and play basketball," Johnson said.

Whether it be the "bounce house", playing basketball, or swimming in the pool, each kid said they have their favorite part of the New Year's "Day of Play".

"The bounce houses are so fun because I love to bounce in them," Destiny Goering, of Sioux City, said.

"My favorite part of today is I get to go swimming and it's really fun," Deondre Neri, of Sioux City, said.

Some kids also said they know the kind of fun that involves exercise is good for them in the long-run.

"It makes you get stronger and makes you get healthy," Neri said.

Wednesday's event was free for all ages.
