More than 200 veterans signed up for Honor Flight

WASHINGTON (KTIV) - The Brushy Creek Area Honor Flight will be taking off from Fort Dodge, Iowa for Washington D.C. May 10 and September 6.

On both of these trips, those who put in time for our country will get to reflect at the war memorials and visit the Arlington National Cemetery.

Veterans from the Korean War or World War II can sign up, but preference is being given to those who served in World War II or are terminally ill.

The organization's chairman Ron Newsum said they already have more than 200 people signed up and each flight usually takes about 100 veterans aboard.

The two flights this year are first come first serve, but they hope to be able to have additional flights in 2015.

"Most of these veterans, including Korean War veterans, came home, either took a plane or took a bus, and more often or not, there was no reception for them when they got home. And, a lot of times they got home one day and started to work the following day. We owe a great deal of gratitude," Newsum said.

Newsum said each flight costs about $100,000 and their organization doesn't receive funding from the government or corporate sponsors.

If you'd like to sign up a veteran, you can find the Honor Flight Network, Veteran Application.
Newsum said if you'd like to donate to the organization, you can send checks payable to 320 South 12th Street, Fort Dodge, IA, 50501
