Winter activities at Stone State Park

Just because the roads at Stone State Park are closed, doesn't mean the park is. In fact, it's actually open year round from 4 o'clock in the morning till 10:30 at night. And, the Park Ranger said there's still plenty of stuff to do during these cold winter months.

"Well there are people that come out here every day and walk their dogs or just go for a hike for exercise. They're coming here to snowmobile or cross country ski, snowshoe, those kind of winter activities," said park ranger Kevin Pape.

Stone Park has more than 1,600 acres of wildlife and trails. All for you, at no cost.

"We don't have a user fee, nope. No fees required. They can just park, pick up a brochure and figure out where to go to explore the park," said Pape.

Pape said on an average winter day, and not like the ones we'll be seeing this week, it's actually not as cold as you might think.

"Because if they dress warmly and hike, they'll stay warm," said Pape. "It's protected from the wind get down in the valley and in some wooded areas it's really quite comfortable."

Because the leaves have fallen, Pape said it's easier to see everything around you.

"They can see different wildlife and experience the park at a different time of year."
