UPDATE: Three water main breaks could be just the beginning as cold weather descends on Sioux City

SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KTIV) - The arctic air is doing a number on Sioux City's old pipes.

Water mains broke at West First Street, forcing the city to close west first from Hamilton to George Street.

Crews braved the extreme cold to try and fix the problem, but it could be a week before the road reopens.

It's one of three water mains that broke in Sioux City Monday, and Mayor Bob Scott said the problem will only get bigger.

"We're going to experience more water main breaks and when we do I would hope our citizens understand that we're going to work on them, we're going to do what we can, but my concern is that we get the water back on and at the same time make sure these workers are safe out in the field," Scott explained.

Scott said he expects breaks along Lewis Boulevard as well, before the winter is through.  Those pipe projects were in the construction plans this year.

The city typically replaces pipes as it fixes roads.
