Siouxland struggles to find shelter for families, women, and children

SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KTIV) -- Despite two dozen available beds at the Gospel Mission's men's shelter, the Siouxland Coalition to End Homelessness said there's a major issue finding housing for families, women, and children in our area.

The Gospel Mission runs a women's and children's center down the road from their men's shelter, but the space inside this shelter is limited.

There are about 8 rooms and those who work for the mission said they're full most of the time.

Chairman of the Siouxland Coalition to End Homelessness Von Vandiver said it's a major challenge we face in Siouxland.

"Our concern is always that people are safe, that people who are homeless have some place safe and warm to spend the night, particularly when there's very cold weather like this and most of the shelters are full. There are very limited options for families," Vandiver said.

Vandiver added how he's seen an increase in the number of people who need shelter in the past few years.

But, the services remain limited.
