USDA announces big buy to help support food banks

SIOUX CITY, Iowa - U.S. Ag Secretary Tom Vilsack announced Tuesday the USDA will be buying up to $126.4 million in fruit and vegetable products to help support food banks and soup kitchens.

That big purchase will help out local organizations like the Food Bank of Siouxland that have seen a growing demand for their services.

The fruits and vegetables will be distributed under the Emergency Food Assistance Program or TEFAP.

TEFAP is one of the programs that helps keep the Food Bank of Siouxland stocked.

Executive Director of the Food Bank of Siouxland Linda Scheid says it's too early to know when they will receive the additional aid, but says it's always good news to hear about extra help.

Scheid says they have seen their demand grow over the past few months.

November and October were their top months ever and December was in the top five.

She says she expects the demand will grow with the cold weather as well.
