Tuesday Morning Headlines

UPDATE: Three water main breaks could be just the beginning as cold weather descends on Sioux City

The bitterly cold weather is taking a toll on Sioux City water mains.  A water main break Monday forced the closure of West First Street from Hamilton to George.  Crews braved the extreme cold to try and repair the break, but it could be a week before the street reopens.  It was one of three water mains that broke in Sioux City.  Some of these water mains are a hundred years old or more.  The city typically replaces them as roads are repaired.

Dakota County Courthouse in Dakota City, NE closed Monday for water main break, will reopen Tuesday

The Dakota County Courthouse will reopen Tuesday morning after a water main break caused it to close Monday.  Water shot 10 to 12 feet into the air and spilled into the parking lot.  No water got into the courthouse, but it had to be closed while the repairs were made.

Sioux City's Gospel Mission provides a safe haven from the cold

For the homeless, having a warm place to stay on bitterly cold days like these can mean everything.  The Gospel Mission reports it still had 25 open beds in their men's shelter Sunday night.  Executive Director Harold Youtzy Junior says he doesn't know of a time they've ever had to turn someone away for lack of beds, but he stresses everyone has to follow the rules, which include no alcohol and no swearing.

Workers in Sioux City wear t-shirts and still keep warm

Not everyone is freezing cold during this arctic spell.  Employees at Davenport Cleaners are sporting t-shirts and tank tops, because of the nature of their work.  It's 78 degrees and pretty humid where they work.  They keep fans running to make sure it doesn't get too hot, and the front windows were frosted over with all of the warm steam.
