SPIRIT LAKE, Iowa (KUOO/KTIV) - The cause of a fire that gutted the interior of a home in Spirit Lake will go undetermined.

The fire marshal investigated the home Friday, but found the damage was too great to determine an origin.

Spirit Lake Fire Chief Pat Daly says firefighters were called to the 2100 block of Denver Avenue shortly after 11:00 Thursday morning...

Daly said "When we first got on the scene here on Denver Avenue we had smoke coming out of the porch and a little bit of fire. It quickly escalated and we ended up calling in Superior and Arnolds Park for manpower."

He says it looked to start toward front of the porch area.

The fire marshal will look at it Friday.

No one was home at the time and no injuries were reported. However, officials say several dogs that were in the house perished in the blaze.

Firefighters were on the scene late Thursday afternoon extinguishing hot spots.

Donations for the Doug and Tammy Zemler family, who lived in the home, can be dropped off at Bank Midwest in Spirit Lake.

Daly says everyone needs to take special precautions with things like space heaters and extension cords especially, and make sure there's nothing combustible near heating sources and water heaters.
