Dismissal of Dordt's lawsuit over the birth control mandate?

The Obama administration is asking a federal court to dismiss a lawsuit filed by Dordt College in Sioux Center, Iowa and another Christian college in Michigan.  The schools don't like the mandate that requires their health insurance plans to provide free birth control coverage.  The Justice Department says the legal challenge by Dordt and Cornerstone University is a meritless attempt to prevent their female employees from obtaining coverage.

Woodbury County tackles budget, makes hundreds of thousands of dollars in cuts

Woodbury County Supervisors continue picking at the budget in hopes of avoiding a tax increase.  On Tuesday, they cut proposed spending at the sheriff's office by $670,000.  They scrapped a proposal to hire new correctional officers and nurses, and cut the number of new patrol cars from 14 to six.  The county's total budget is $51 million.  Supervisors say they still need to trim another $450,000.

Sioux City officials discuss increasing property taxes

The Sioux City City Council is also crunching numbers, hoping to avoid the first increase in property tax rates in five years.  A proposal before the council would increase taxes by $1.19 per thousand dollars valuation to a total of $17.44.  One concern of city officials is the potential loss of revenue from traffic cameras.  Budget hearings will continue at city hall for two more months before a spending plan is finalized.
