Iowa is facing a deficit in its infrastructure budget and one idea that has been floated is a gas tax increase. The house Transportation Committee chair has promised a bill raising the state gas tax by a dime to take care of an annual shortfall in road funding. The idea of a hike hasn't been popular among local representatives or their constituents. There is belief that shortfall could be met through alternative routes. Iowa last raised the gas tax in 1989.
With the first week of the Iowa legislature down some lawmakers have returned to their districts to talk about the issues. Some Siouxland Representatives spoke with community members about a few controversial issues on Sunday. One of the issues up for discussion raising the minimum wage. The Republican reps say while an increase may help workers, but it could also hurt small businesses.
A group of U.S. Army Reservists said goodbye to their families this weekend as they prepared to embark to Afghanistan. The U.S. Army's 415th Military Police Detachment out of Pocahontas got the call to head overseas. On Saturday, they had a departure ceremony before heading to the east coast where they will spend 10 weeks before deploying to Afghanistan for nine months.
One local family has a lot to be thankful for. Siouxland Habitat for Humanity dedicated a home to the Williams family in North Sioux City on Sunday. The family says they're so excited to have a home they'll be in for a long time, where they can all stay together.
