West High and Center for Siouxland make "Blessing Bags"

SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KTIV)- One area of Siouxland spent all day not just celebrating Martin Luther King day, but using it as an reason to take action and lend a hand.

The Center for Siouxland partnered with West High students to assemble "Blessing Bags."

The handmade volunteer bags contain things like soap, toothpaste, socks, and other goods that we may take for granted, but are hard to come by for those homeless in Siouxland. "I think its really important that we reach out to other people. I know that I take for granted when I step into the shower that I'm going to have soap and shampoo, and the proper hygiene items. When you're homeless those items are intangibles that you need but you may not always have access to," Teressa Markworth, Director of the Siouxland Volunteer Center said.

Markworth says using today as a day of action is important. "Martin Luther King day is supposed to be a day on, not a day off, although many banks and schools that are in different parts of the country got the day off of school," Markworth said.

The bags are being handed out at the Soup Kitchen tonight and the Gospel Mission on Wednesday.
