SIOUX CITY (KTIV) - The suspect in this weekend's homicide investigation is dead.

A veteran law enforcement officer shot suspect, Felix Navarrete, 29, once in the chest during a SWAT mission to serve his arrest warrant Tuesday morning.

Police began working on this mission at 3:30am Tuesday as they worked on a lead regarding Navarrete's location.

Before the situation ended, an officer was forced to shoot and kill the suspect as he attempted to flee the scene, armed with a handgun.

Authorities say they were working on a lead in the search for the suspect in the West 27th Street homicide. After they confirmed Navarrete was at 2728 Helen Street with several females and two small children, SWAT teams dispatched to the location.

"As surveillance continued, the Sioux City SWAT team assembled in the area around 8:00am. At 9:20am, all known occupants except Navarrete had exited the apartment," Sioux City Police Chief Doug Young said.

SWAT teams moved in on the apartment to find Navarrete armed with a handgun. Over a concern for public safety, a veteran officer stationed outside the building shot him once in the chest through the 2nd story window. Navarrete landed on the ground and was taken into custody and transferred to Mercy Medical Center where he later died. The officer who fired the shot was placed on administrative leave, as per police policy.

"We have policy, we have different things that he's got to go through for our reassurance that he is able to come back to work," Young said.

The investigators working on this weekend's case knew that this murder was related to two others spanning the past three months in Sioux City, one at the same home and one on Oak Street, all involving the same people.

"I don't know how big this group is, but we're dealing with several individuals, some of which we have apprehended and taken into custody," Young said.

However, they say those involved aren't a danger to the general public. They're still working to make sure the group of people involved are brought to justice, even if not directly connected to the homicides.

"As we move forward with our investigations, there very well could be other people taken into custody also on unrelated events," Young said.

Police are still looking for one more in connection with this weekend's shooting.

20-year-old Samantha Levering is Native American, 5',6" tall weighting 130 pounds.

Levering's a "person of interest" they'd like to question.

Police say she may have valuable information to help with their investigation.
