Woodbury County sheriff's overtime budget is still up in the air

SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KTIV) - SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KTIV)- On Tuesday, Woodbury County supervisors tried to make cuts in the sheriff department's overtime budget, but didn't come to a decision.

The sheriff said the county jail is already working with a limited number of employees.

And, even though the $189,500 allotted for overtime is four times the amount from last year's budget, the sheriff said it's fair.

"I haven't come up with some wild number. I've come up with a number that could still allow us to have a little bit of growth, but not to the point where it's going to be outlandish," Sheriff Dave Drew said.

The board will take a second look at the figure at next week's meeting. And, finance director Dennis Butler said the board will have to find ways to save, or generate, more money.

"We're going to do the best effort we can to look for new revenues first, go through all of our revenues, and make sure we got everything in there. And, then the board next week will maybe have to do some transfer of funds," Dennis Butler said

Butler added the board, and sheriff, have already agreed on about $670,000 in cuts to their department. But, the sheriff said the county jail is already working at the minimum level.
