Norfolk students receive grants to give back

NORFOLK, NE. (KTIV/US92) - Dozens of Siouxland youngsters will be helping to make their communities a little better with the help of a local group.

The Norfolk Nebraska Philanthropy Council handed out ten grants of one-thousand dollars to various youth aged kindergarten to young adult.  The kids submitted ideas for projects that they'd like to see done to make their hometown a little better.

Jefferson Elementary School in Norfolk was among the winners. Students there say they'll be creating baskets of breakfast items to send out with the local Meals on Wheels.

"It's pretty much being helpful. We want to help other people, instead of just caring about yourself," said Martino Young.

Another winner from Norfolk High School says she'll be using her grant to sew and donate pillowcases to Faith Regional Health Regional Health Services' Child Advocacy Center.

"What if they're taken out of their home or going through an abusive situation? I see people at school all the time that have gone through something like that, so I just want to try to do whatever I can," explained Jaden Moore.

Philanthropy Council officials say they received a total of 26 entrants. They say they've received interest from area residents who want to privately fund some of the projects that weren't awarded grants. The winners will all be recognized during the Philanthropy Council's annual Celebrate Giving event in two weeks.
