Siouxland bar opens just in time for the Super Bowl

A new railroad-themed bar in Sanborn, Iowa opened just in time for the Super Bowl, thanks to a little help from one of the owners' friends. The Rails Bar has been in the works for almost a year. Kelli Van Gelder and her husband knew they had to be open for Sunday's big game. That's where Marv DeVries comes in. He hand-crafted the 43 foot bar and used an actual rail from Sanborn's railroad days past. Kelli said getting everything done in time was stressful, but worth it to have a place for the community to come together.

Norfolk students receive grants to give back

Siouxland youngsters will help improve their communities with help from the Norfolk Philanthropy Council. The group presented grants of $1,000 each to area students who submitted ideas for projects to improve their towns. Among the recipients are Jefferson Elementary in Norfolk, which will make breakfast baskets for the Meals on Wheels program. Another recipient from Norfolk High School will use her grant to sew pillowcases for the local Child Advocacy Center.

Sen. Anderson pushes for property tax break for veterans

Iowa State Senator Bill Anderson wants to give disabled veterans a tax break. He and Representative Ron Jorgensen met with voters at a series of forums in Siouxland over the weekend. Anderson said he's drafting legislation that would reduce property taxes for disabled veterans by the amount of their disability. The two Republican lawmakers also discussed Iowa's gas tax, education and infrastructure with voters.

Community rallies behind South Sioux City, NE woman diagnosed with cancer

A thousand people gathered in South Sioux City, Nebraska in a big show of support for a local city councilwoman. Stephanie Dahl is being treated for cancer of the bile duct. On Saturday, thousands of dollars was raised through a pancake breakfast, silent auction and bake sale. Her colleagues said Dahl's usually the one stepping up to help others, so they're more than willing to lend a hand to help her.
