Siouxland community accused of gender imbalance

SANBORN, Iowa (AP) -- Sanborn, Iowa doesn't plan to change the way it does business to follow state rules on gender balance.

The city was contacted by the Iowa Ombudsman's office in October after the city council didn't chose a female candidate for a three-member utility board.

They re-appointed a longstanding board member instead, meaning the panel remained all-male.

The Ombudsman sent a letter to the mayor and city council in Sanborn this week saying she is frustrated.

However, there is no penalty for not following the rules.
