MERRILL, Iowa (KTIV)- A fire has ruined two barns belonging to an area family.

The fire broke out at 23578 on K22 near Merrill Saturday night.

Authorities say heating lamp inside the hog barn was kicked over by a pig.

Two barns started on fire and were nearly destroyed.

The owner, Stan Yoerger, declined to speak on camera, but said the sows were housed there as a part of his granddaughter's 4-H project, along with several piglets .

Crews from Merrill and Le Mars were called in to fight the fire.

Bill Merchant, Merrill Fire Chief said there were "Probably about a dozen hogs in it, lots of flames, actually two buildings were on fire."

No word from the family on whether or not they'll try to rebuild the structures.
