Belle Plaine toddler dead after apparent drowning

BELLE PLAINE (KWWL) - The Belle Plaine Police Department is investigating the apparent drowning of a 1-year-old girl Sunday morning.

Officers were called to 604 Sixth Avenue just before noon on Sunday.

According to the police department, the father was giving the girl and her 2-year-old brother a bath and left the room for a short time.

When the father returned, the girl was unconscious and unresponsive.

The girl was taken to St. Luke's Hospital in Cedar Rapids where she was pronounced dead.

The Belle Plaine Police Department and Iowa Department of Human Services are investigating.
