East boys crack 4A rankings after 10-game winning streak

SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KTIV) -

One of the hottest Class 4A teams in Iowa is Sioux City East. The Black Raiders have won ten in a row, to improve to 16-3 on the season.

East's winning streak started when 6-foot-11 Ikenna Okwarabizie joined the team. The native of Nigeria is averaging 13 points and 12 rebounds a game.

Senior Wyatt Mounts is the team's leading scorer at over 16 points a night. Mounts is also making a very good 47 percent of his three-point tries. But the addition of the big man in the middle has made East a very dangerous team.

"Without the lights being on and the crowd in the stands, you always kind of wonder what's going to happen," said East head coach Ras Vanderloo. "Obviously he's adapted very well and performed very well in the games and that's the reason you play. He's making everyone around him better besides being a very good player."

"I think just making sure we all stay on the same page, defense, running the plays, making sure we help him out with plays," said East senior Chase Kern. "Just communication, that's the main thing that's going to keep this thing rolling."

East is 10th in this week's AP Class 4A rankings and will host North on Friday. The Stars have a one-game lead in conference play.

The Black Raiders won the first meeting, 51-49.
