Winter weather across the nation is having impact on Red Cross blood donations
(UNDATED) Recent winter weather from coast to coast has meant more than just snow days and snuggling by the fire. It has also meant more than 1,000 canceled American Red Cross blood drives in 34 states, including Nebraska and Iowa, resulting in about 35,000 uncollected blood and platelet donations. The extraordinary number of cancellations is the equivalent of the Red Cross shutting down its national operations from more than two full days.
Currently blood products are going to hospitals as quickly as they are collected. The Red Cross is hoping eligible donor will help replenish the blood supply. All blood types are needed, but there is an urgent need for O negative, O positive, B negative and A negative types.
Several blood drives will be held over the next couple of weeks in Siouxland. For a list of them, click here or call 1-800-RED-CROSS
