IRGC: Non-profit files for gaming license for Argosy Casino site; community could have two licenses

Could Sioux City end up with two casinos? A new local non-profit group called the Greater Siouxland Improvement Association has applied to the Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission for a second gaming license for Woodbury County. If approved, the administrator of the IRGC said, in theory, Sioux City could have a Hard Rock Hotel and Casino and the Argosy Casino riverboat. The IRGC's next meeting is March 5th, but it isn't known yet if the license application will be on the agenda.

Former Musketeer Pacioretty hopes to win gold with Team USA

Sioux City Musketeers have someone to cheer for at the Winter Games in Sochi. Max Pacioretty is on the U.S. Olympic Hockey Team. He played for the Muskies in 2006, and quickly became the dominant player in the league. The following year, he was drafted by the Montreal Canadians of the NHL, where he's led the team in points each of the last two seasons. Pacioretty had one assist in Team USA's first Olympic game Thursday, a 7-1 win over Slovakia.

Students learn about agriculture opportunities

Students at Ridge View Middle School got a lesson on what life is like in the ag industry. More than a dozen speakers talked to students about their ag careers and experiences in the industry. Some of the topics they covered included surveying, conservation, and the ever-changing technology in the field. This is the second year that the Sac County Farm Bureau has sponsored agriculture day at the school.

Crop predictions for upcoming planting season

Siouxland farmers heard about agriculture in our changing world. Several hundred attended the Western Iowa Farmers Alliance Ag Summit in Sioux Center on Thursday. They heard from Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Bill Northey. He discussed ways the state is promoting a science-based voluntary initiative for farmers to reduce the amount of chemicals that end up in waterways.
