UNI Women upset Wichita State

 The University of Northern Iowa women's basketball team upset the No. 24 Wichita State Shockers 80-71 Sunday afternoon, ending their 20-game winning streak. UNI is now 13-11 overall and 9-4 in MVC play.

The Panthers led the Shockers the entire game, handing them just their third loss of the season. Brooke Brown and Stephanie Davison combined for seven made free throws in the final minute of the game to secure the 80-71 victory.

Brittni Donaldson led the team with a career-high 22 points also notching four assists and no turnovers as the Panthers starting point guard. Jen Keitel added 19 points and six boards while Brown scored 17 and Amber Sorenson finished with 12.

The Panthers got off to a quick start on the Shockers, taking an 11-3 lead heading into the first media timeout. Sorenson was then able to hit back-to-back three-pointers to give the Panthers a 17-6 advantage with 12:54 left in the first half.

UNI kept its double-digit advantage after Donaldson hit four straight free throws to give UNI a 24-11 lead with 9:51 on the clock. Wichita State was then able to score six unanswered points to cut the Panther lead down to 25-17 after Alex Harden knocked in a long jumper.

Wichita State was able to bring the UNI lead back down to just 10 points, but Madison Weekly answered with a big three to put the Panthers up 35-23 with 3:35 to play in the first half. Donaldson scored five clutch points for UNI in the final 40 seconds of the half to give UNI a 41-34 lead heading into halftime.

Keitel scored the Panthers first five points of the second half, giving them a 46-36 lead. After Keitel hit a long jumper, Wichita State was then able to score five unanswered points of their own, bringing UNI's lead down to 49-45 with 14:00 remaining in the game.

Keitel continued her strong presence in the lane, fighting her way to a layup and converting on her free throw for a three-point play to give UNI a 54-48 lead. Donaldson then hit her second and third threes of the game to give UNI a 59-49 advantage with 8:50 on the clock.

Brown gave the Panthers another double-digit lead after hitting four free throws to make the score 68-57 with 5:01 left to play. Wichita State's Jaleesa Chapel was then able to cut UNI's lead down to seven points off a jumper, making the score 71-64 at the 1:40 mark.

The Panthers then drained 10 free throws in the final two minutes of the game to pick up an 80-71 victory over Wichita State.
