Friendly competition brings out blood donors in Sheldon, IA

The bitterly cold winter has kept people from rolling up their sleeves to donate blood. But, first responders in one Siouxland town have turned a donation drive into a friendly competition.

The blood-mobile made a stop in Sheldon, Iowa, for the 7th annual "Heroes Behind the Badges."

The competition between emergency services is to see who can raise the most amount of blood given from the community.

This year, the ambulance and police department was up against the fire department and emergency management agency.

"Hopefully this is a way to get some people, kind of make it fun, get some people come out that maybe normally wouldn't come out and give blood just cause there's such a need," said Lyle Bolkema, Sheldon Police Chief.

"Usually somebody knows somebody who, you know, received blood and knows that it's very beneficial," said Travis Andersen, Blood Mobile Supervisor.

The team of firefighters and emergency managers won the competition by recruiting 18 donors. The team of police officers and ambulance workers got 13 donors.

But, because several lives can be saved with every pint of blood that's donated, organizers say today's effort saved 93 lives.

The blood donated goes to the Community Blood Bank.
