NORFOLK, Neb. (KTIV/US92) Students in one Siouxland community can now stay closer to home as they work to obtain higher level college degrees.
Officials with Northeast Community College in Norfolk, Nebraska and Bellevue University based out of Bellevue, Nebraska entered into a memorandum of understanding Tuesday morning to allow for students in Northeast's 20-county service area to take upper level undergraduate and graduate level college courses in northeast Nebraska.
Bellevue University President Dr. Marry Hawkins said that this will allow for non-traditional students to achieve the higher level degrees.
"…and allowing students an easier path toward a bachelors degree and maybe a masters degree. Because certainly they're reaching out to us now but by having a presence here it will make it much more accessible and easy for students," said Bellevue University President Dr. Marry Hawkins.
Dr. Michael Chipps, President of Northeast Community College, said this agreement further expands the educational offering of the local community college.
"What we do is build all these things to develop a menu of different courses and programs that people can take to advance their educational opportunities. There are so many people in rural Nebraska who want a change to have an associate's degree, which is first and foremost, but to have a bachelors, masters, and eventually a PhD," said Northeast Community College President Dr. Michael Chipps.
Under the agreement, Bellevue will hire a full time coordinator to build program needs this spring, and Northeast will provide classroom, laboratory, and distance learning space for Bellevue's upper level courses.
