Early morning fire destroys a barn near Salix, Iowa

SALIX, Iowa (KTIV) -

Salix firefighters got the call just before three Thursday morning for a fire at 2461 Allison Ave., which is about a mile south of the Sioux Gateway Airport.

The man who reported the blaze said the flames lit up the night sky.  He says when he saw the fire he ran to the family's home to wake them up. They were able to make it out safely.

When crews arrived, the barn was fully engulfed in flames. The family used the barn for storage, and kept gas cans in the barn which helped fuel the fire and caused several small explosions.

"When we got on scene, the structure was fully engulfed and there wasn't much left of the mainframe.  The roof had come down and it's an old barn they were using for storage so it's all old lumber, so it went up pretty quick," said Justin Iverson, the Salix Fire Chief.

While the barn is a total loss, the family's home is ok.

No injuries were reported.
