Frontier Airlines adds service between Denver and Sioux City

SIOUX CITY (KTIV) - On May 12, 2008, Frontier Airlines flew their last flight from the Sioux Gateway terminal after less than seven months of service in the Sioux City area.

"We left the area in 2008 because of financial restructuring," Kate O'Malley, Frontier Airlines said.

Frontier Airlines said back in 2008 that they were reorganizing under Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, stopping their service in five cities. But on Monday...

"We're back now, and we're committed to the area," O'Malley said.

The carrier announced they would once more fly between Sioux City and Denver. And this time, they're bringing a bigger suitcase.

"We previously served the route from 2007 to 2008 on smaller regional jets that held about 74 seats. We're coming back with our larger Airbus 319, which holds about 138 seats," O'Malley said.

Airport Director Curt Miller says it's a long time coming for the Sioux Gateway Airport, and they're excited to jump on the opportunity.

"Especially travelers that leisure travel to the west, we know we've lost a lot of that to surrounding airports. This gives them an opportunity to come back to Sioux City and add to our numbers," Curt Miller, Airport Director said.

Miller says he sees this being a much more long-term partnership than the one that transpired before.

"With the consolidation in the air industry and some of the mergers and other things that have happened, we feel like the air industry itself is a lot healthier today. They're starting to make some profits, and they're looking for ways to expand business, which is good for us," Miller said.

And though Frontier officials say they aren't looking at expansion just yet, they're not ruling it out during their time in Sioux City.

"We'll watch how bookings go, and we'll evaluate as we need to. We're very excited to start service to Sioux City," O'Malley said.

Frontier announced six total new routes Monday in celebration of their 20th birthday this summer.

As a part of the deal, if you book your Sioux City to Denver flight before February 26th, the ticket rates are as low as 49 dollars one way.

SIOUX CITY (KTIV) - They're back! And airport officials and Sioux City leaders are celebrating.

Frontier Airlines announced this morning that it will resume flights into and out of Sioux Gateway Airport, starting June 12.

That announcement seemed to come out of the blue.

Airport Director Curt Miller says Frontier approached Sioux City officials about renewing service.

The flights will be direct to and from Frontier's main hub of Denver.

They won't be daily round-trip flights: the carrier will fly out of Sioux Gateway three times a week, Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

The flights will come into Sioux Gateway from Denver on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays.

They're going to offer introductory fares as low as $49 each way.

Frontier will join American Eagle with it's flights to Chicago in providing air service to Sioux City.

This will be a return to Sioux City for Frontier Airlines.

The carrier arrived to great fanfare in October 2007 when it launched direct flights to the airline's hub in Denver.

It was the first time Sioux Gateway had enjoyed two airlines in six years.

But it didn't last long.

Eight months later, Frontier discontinued service here citing the high cost of fuel as the main reason.
